BLOGGING FROM BELOW
The New York Sun has a neat article today on the rise of Internet sites devoted to life on the subway. To the right is a sketch by West Harlem resident and theater set and costume designer Cully Long, who draws in his Moleskine during his daily commutes on the A Line and posts the resulting portraits on his site.
"I'm attracted to older people because they have interesting faces," Mr. Cully
[sic], who works as a theater set and costume designer, said. "But in the winter, I drew nothing but people with scarves pulled up around their faces so you could only see their eyes." Mr. Cully[sic], who next week is releasing a self-published book of subway sketches titled "A Line," says his unsuspecting subjects rarely notice his gaze. "People just close down on the subway," Mr. Cully[sic] said. "They're reading or listening to their iPods, and just don't pay attention to me."
For some reason, the Sun's reporter started referring to Mr. Long as Mr. Cully, (Mr. [firstname]), in her article. He doesn't complain about it on his site though, so maybe it's not a mixup at all.
The article also mentions the site Subwayblogger.com, written by a guy named Jim who didn't want his last name given (possibly to avoid any of the confusion Mr. Long suffered earlier in the article.)
Frustrations about long subway waits, crowded quarters, and weekend train line diversions also fuel much of the blogosphere's chatter about the subway system. The editor of Subwayblogger.com writes on his BlackBerry during his morning and evening commutes, and then posts his musings from work or home.
Jim, who works for a television station and did not want his last name published, updated Subwayblogger.com yesterday afternoon with a post about eating in transit: "A cup of coffee or a soda is one thing. However, breaking out an entire meal of KFC is a little strange."
I'll have to check both of those out.

No.... It was a mix-up! I'm from the south though... we try not to complain when it's out of our hands. I have a semi-unusual name, it happens.
Thanks for your mention!

So there you have it, Cully Long is just a well-mannered southerner who doesn't mind if his name is transposed in print. I should point out that Long has self-published a collection of his subway drawings. It's available for purchase here.
