POSITIVE VISUALIZATION

After a few necessary errands were run Sunday afternoon, I stopped in for an early and small meal with my friend L––. She works in a Gramercy bar and wasn't sure when she'd get a chance to eat during the holiday rush. The timetable of my dinner wasn't quite nailed down either. Over a takeout tray of nachos, I got to hear about the customers who had just left:
"Those people were so annoying. That woman asked me while I was cutting fruit 'What are the limes for?'""Probably for all those British sailors who keep popping in."*
[Unfortunately, the above is what regularly passes for my banter: crypticisms laden with irony and/or unlikeliness.]
While I consider myself exceedingly clever, the remark went unremarked. 20 minutes later, however, a group of men entered the bar. They were from out of town and apparently ready to tear it up for New Year's Eve. I glanced over my shoulder and noticed that they were all dressed in naval whites. A closer examination of their epaulettes identified them as members of the Royal Navy. British. Freakin'. Sailors.
I looked at L–– and whispered "Get the limes. They're here."
* Brits are informally referred to as "Limeys" because of the history of that country's navy. In an effort to stave off scurvy, British naval personnel were generally well supplied with limes on their empire-expanding trips around the world.
