NAME DROPPING EXTRAVAGANZA
One of the things we sorely missed writing about at the time it
occurred was a party we went to in late June hosted by Gawker Media's
Nick
Denton. A college roommate of ours,
target=_blank">Mark, later parlayed his Master's degree in writing
into a gig slinging snark and insinuation from the west coast as the
href="http://www.defamer.com" target=_blank">Defamer. Beckoned
back east by his dark lord, Denton, Mark gave us a call and invited us
to a Bavarian beer hall on the Lower East Side. There, I discovered
that in the nascent years of online media, everyone knows everyone and
an unfortunate fire in the backyard of
href="http://www.zumschneider.com/" target=_blank">Zum Schneider
could have wiped out 40% of non-political coverage on the Internet in
an instant.
Who was milling about getting tanked on Denton's dime?

Gawker.

nowhere to be seen. Word was that the guys from
href="http://www.Gizmodo.com" target=_blank">Gizmodo and
href="http://www.Jalopnik.com" target=_blank">Jalopnik were
present, but I was wedged in one spot between a potted tree and the
outdoor service bar and didn't get to meet as many people as I should
have. The boys from
target=_blank">Collegehumor.com apparently showed after I left, but
after reading

html?8br&oref=login" target=_blank">their profile in the
NYTimes last week, I probably would have puked from jealousy
if I'd met them. Working man that I am, I jetted out of there pretty
early, but Mark tells me that the whole affair went into the early
hours of the next morning and his appearance the next day at his
brother's birthday party brought back fond memories of many Sunday
mornings/afternoons during college. I know I had a great time and was
happy to put faces to a lot of familiar online names. It was a great
group of people, and I'm not just saying that because Denton paid for
my expensive foreign 32 oz. beer.
