NAME DROPPING EXTRAVAGANZA
One of the things we sorely missed writing about at the time it
occurred was a party we went to in late June hosted by Gawker Media's
Nick
Denton. A college roommate of ours,
target=_blank">Mark, later parlayed his Master's degree in writing
into a gig slinging snark and insinuation from the west coast as the
href="http://www.defamer.com" target=_blank">Defamer. Beckoned
back east by his dark lord, Denton, Mark gave us a call and invited us
to a Bavarian beer hall on the Lower East Side. There, I discovered
that in the nascent years of online media, everyone knows everyone and
an unfortunate fire in the backyard of
href="http://www.zumschneider.com/" target=_blank">Zum Schneider
could have wiped out 40% of non-political coverage on the Internet in
an instant.
Who was milling about getting tanked on Denton's dime?

Gawker.

nowhere to be seen. Word was that the guys from

href="http://www.Jalopnik.com" target=_blank">Jalopnik were
present, but I was wedged in one spot between a potted tree and the
outdoor service bar and didn't get to meet as many people as I should
have. The boys from
target=_blank">Collegehumor.com apparently showed after I left, but
after reading

html?8br&oref=login" target=_blank">their profile in the
NYTimes last week, I probably would have puked from jealousy
if I'd met them. Working man that I am, I jetted out of there pretty
early, but Mark tells me that the whole affair went into the early
hours of the next morning and his appearance the next day at his
brother's birthday party brought back fond memories of many Sunday
mornings/afternoons during college. I know I had a great time and was
happy to put faces to a lot of familiar online names. It was a great
group of people, and I'm not just saying that because Denton paid for
my expensive foreign 32 oz. beer.

UNDER RECONSTRUCTION
Like a virtual Jenga tower, Lexiphane.com remains online, but something
I am wary about breathing too close to lest the whole thing topple back
into cyber-oblivion. In the wake of a total reinstallation and
rebuild, many things remain to be done to bring the site back to its
former glory. Many tedious time-consuming things. Until these are all
taken care of––and they will be, just in a gradual piece-meal fashion––
links may not function, images and graphics will be unavailable, and
formatting may be spotty. And the Galleries, sigh, the Galleries seem
to be completely crunked and I pray I won't have to rebuild them from
scratch. For the time being, however, Lexiphane.com is back online
and I look forward to having some fun with everyone in the coming
months. Thanks for coming back.

PSYCHE
While we're back online, now might be a good time to plug our friend
Gina's show "Psyche." Tonight is the last evening of its five-day run
at the Favored
Nations Theater on Wooster Street
href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=66+Wooster+St,+New+York,+NY+10012&s
pn=0.029662,0.057077&hl=en" target=_blank">in SOHO. Here's a short
description of the hour-and-half performance:
Dr. James Barry was born in 1796. He was a surgeon and a soldier. He
fought duels and treated lepers. He was tried for sodomy and acquitted.
He was also a woman. An epic musical about war, medicine, sexuality and
love, told through the life of a flamboyant and fascinating human
being.
So imagine ER, plus The Longest Day, Hamilton vs. Burr, Oscar
Wilde, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Make it all a period
piece and you've got "Psyche." Sounds like a stretch, I know, but
Gina's a talented woman and I know it's going to turn out very well.
Tonight's final performance starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available
href="http://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?showCode=PSY0"
target="blank">here for $15 a head.
UPDATE: Last night's performance of "Psyche" was actually
fantastic. I say "actually" because some people may note a hint of
skepticism in the above post. The show was actually hilarious--a mix
of musical, dance, and dramatic set pieces that wound up being very
touching in the end. Connie Hall played protagonist J.M. Barrie and
unenviously had to make her entrance stark naked. Her portrayal of
the gender masquerading physician was superb, however, and she bears a
striking resemblance to Katherine Hepburn. Gina Hirsch has
surprisingly few lines through the first two thirds of the play, but
comes on strong towards the end with her hilarious portrayal of
Florence Nightingale. After the show I asked Gina how long it took the
Favoured Nations theater group to put together what looked like a very
intricate performance. The answer: three and a half weeks, which
really boggled my mind. I wish "Psyche"'s run would have lasted more
than five days because I would recommend it to many people. Gina
seemed pleased that it was over, however, as the whole performance
seemed very physically demanding. Not to mention the fact that the
whole cast had to remain hidden under gurneys in an un-airconditioned
theater while in period costumes for 40 minutes before the show began.
That fact alone defied belief from me. Congratulations to the whole
cast and crew of "Psyche" for a fantastic show.
